The Web is one big basket where we store loads and loads of information that users digest every single day. In the Information Age, it is necessary that Web users have ease of information access in your website in order to keep them around. if you deprive your visitors of the ability to get relevant information, expect them to visit some other website completely.

And what can you use in order to allow them to search for information? There comes the search engine, which was perfected by Internet giant Google. With Google's help, we now have the Web as we know it: an intricate web of linked webpages, each of which offers loads of information. Google automagically sorts through these heaps of information and comes out with webpages that are relevant to your search.

Sometimes, however, Google is not enough to suit your website needs. Our inability to peer through Google's sophisticated algorithms prevent us from determining what actually goes first in the search results. Also, what we have with Google is a mere keyword search. What if we want to search for information for a particular information field (i.e. advanced search)?

In this cases, we are better suited with alternative search libraries. Apache Lucene comes into mind. Lucene is an open-source highly-scalable search engine library that was first implemented on Java. Apache's API is powerful enough to focus on text searching and indexing of various data sources, such as databases, PDF files, DOC files, and such. Through the use of additional libraries, it's also possible to index more file types. There's even a variation of Hibernate, called Hibernate Search, that combines the object-relational mapping capabilities of Hibernate with the indexing-and-searching features of Lucene.

I've been using Apache Lucene for quite some time and I must say that I'm a satisfied customer. Although I haven't been able to tap the library's fullest potentials (you can alter the ranking algorithm, for instance), Lucene has been a very helpful addition to my web projects. When you think Google is not enough for your website, go for Lucene.
