Thank author of this post/comment

The last decade, from a technological standpoint, is characterized with the exponential increase of the use of the Internet in our lives. From shopping to getting loads of information, the Internet has played a very important role in the evolution of the way we look at things.

One very notable use of Internet technology in delivering services is the cloud. Basically, in this cloud system, software services are hosted in the Internets. Clients will then have to avail of the service via a subscription system or probably a pay-per-use system. One notable example of this kind of system is Google Apps, which has found itself having increasing clients in recent months.

Apple, on the other hand, has found ways to use the Internet for its benefit, with the help of its applications like iTunes. That then leaves us with Microsoft, which seem to not have any innovative cloud-based invention in the past decade. Their closed and traditional software system prevented the company from making any achievements in this area.

This time, more and more people are ditching Microsoft Office for an online service like Google Apps, which allowed them to use updated and similar software for a fraction of the cost and only everytime they wish to use it. Microsoft will have a lot of catching up to do if it want to stays in the battlefield or risk losing like how IBM lost its dominance over the field decades ago.

Microsoft has come up with its cloud computing platform recently, though, calling it the Windows Azure platform. It's Microsoft's first step towards cloud computing and it seems to be doing well. It basically has an online operating system, the Windows Azure, and a set of systems that allow clients to manage their applications off-site. Let's see how Microsoft will adapt to the changing market in the coming months.
