They say a photo is worth a thousand words. True enough, a website becomes more appealing when you have a lot of photos to complement the walls of text seen all throughout your webpage. But have you asked yourself if the images that you use in your website are legally there? Or did you just take the images from the Internet and used them indiscriminately?

You may not realize it now, but when you take visual materials from the Internet to create your website logos and other visual accompaniments, it is possible that you commit copyright infringement. You may be free to use these photos for your own consumption, but when you use them in your own website, there may be a case of copyright violations committed without your knowledge.

First rule of thumb: if you see an image in the Internet and you want to use it, you must get permission from the owner of the image. The owner may end up not pursuing legal action against you, but you should do it out of courtesy or risk getting your online reputation damaged.

You may come across the term "copyright-free" at times. You will be surprised at how many people use this concept in order to defend their indiscriminate use of an image. When an image is copyright-free, meaning it is in the public domain, you can never call it yours. Only those images that you create on your own are those that you can call fully yours. Copyright-free images will forever be copyright-free images.

And royalty-free images? They are not free like copyright-free. Instead, with royalty-free images, you will just have to pay once for the use of an image. Afterwards, you can use the image as many times as you want as long as you stick with the licensing agreement. Traditionally, you have to pay the owner of the image each time you use an image. With a royalty-free image, that is not the case anymore.

These are just two kinds of Web images that you have to take note of. There are loads more out there. Not sure what to do? Don't take any chances. Don't use images you find in the Internet without permission from the owner and without reading the user licensing agreement.
