Facebook Games: Do You Play Them?

One of the reasons why Facebook shot to global popularity are the applications created by third-party developers. These applications, in particular the games, basically justify their existence and maintenance through income-generating schemes from the users of the applications.

For games, the usual route is always to sell some sort of special coins that can be used to speed up building processes or do some other special trick that you will have to work really hard for if you didn't choose to purchase the coins. For example, in the office-building game Ponzi, you will have to wait for long hours (sometimes days) just to be able too upgrade your skyscrapers.

These game coins usually don't cost much. For example, in Ponzi, I believe you only need to have $10 in order to purchase 40 game coins. Everytime you upgrade a building using your game coins, you only usually need around 8 coins.

My friends usually deride these game coins and tell me that only a few people would actually buy these game coins. Why would people even think of paying money for these games, anyway? A lot of them actually would. Companies won't make a lot of games every now and then if they don't make money. Some of the largest game app companies, like GameFish, usually makes millions out of this kind of ventures, which is not bad. Not bad at all.

What they found even funnier was the fact that I was one of those people who actually bought these game coins. They thought it was a waste of money. The truth? I actually thought it was a waste of change as well. Now, I don't play any of these Facebook games anymore and concentrate on playing stand-alone games instead, those that don't sell me coins. And I think I've been enjoying them more that way. At least I don't have to have an Internet connection just to play a game that is even more varied and more complex than those in Facebook.
