Microsoft's Failed Acquisition of Facebook

Microsoft made a multi-million dollar investment to the popular social networking site Facebook back in 2007 and since then, the two had partnered in a number of projects.

They figured a partnership for Facebook's search to use and display results from Bing.com. They also collaborated with Docs.com, a word processor for the web that can be used within Facebook.

But more recently, Facebook and Microsoft figured in a partnership that will let users open MS Office and PDF attachments in Facebook's chat box using Office.com document viewer.

But before Microsoft did all these, did you know that the Redmond-based company tried to acquire Facebook, multiple times, and ultimately failed?

It was revealed during the Le Web conference in Paris recently. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer offered a whopping $15 billion for Facebook in 2007, but Mark Zuckerberg turned the offer down. Ballmer then tried to devise a plan to acquire Facebook in stages. But the Facebook founder was tough that Ballmer ultimately dropped his plans.

This makes me wonder what would become of Facebook had Microsoft succeeded in acquiring them.
