Facebook gained 250 milliom more accounts in just one year

In the summer of 2010, Facebook announced that they already have more than 500 million active accounts in their social networking site. That number is already an amazing feat for Facebook, given the fact that it took 6 years for FB to get those number.

But if the report from TechCrunch is to be believed, Facebook has become pore popular than ever, and the rate of its growth by the number of active accounts in the website is simply astronomical.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook in less than a year managed to handle 250 million new accounts. That is bigger than any number of users joining Facebook in a year. Six years it took them to have 500 million, and now it's taken them only a year to have 250 million accounts more.

But of course there are some issues that needs to be dealt with. The number of accounts in Facebook cannot be translated directly into the same number of users. Most users have multiple accounts. Almost everyone I know actually have more than one Facebook account.

Also, many are speculating that this is just a way for Facebook to hype up their impending IPO. This is a normal strategy taken by companies to strengthen their user base ahead of opening their doors to public investors.

Facebook has yet to release its official word on the matter.
