Webmaster and SEOWebP, Google's Alternative to JPEG
JPEG is undeniably the most popular image format in the world wide web. Almost every image available in the internet is in this format. There are of course many others who would want to challenge JPEG's dominance like PNG and BMP, but they just can't replicate the success of the former. There is but one problem with JPEG images, it's too big and thus slows down file transfer. Google noted this concern and came up with the idea of bringing the JPEG file size lower, but still offer almost the same quality. As a result, Google recently revealed their newest project, the WebP, their alternative image format. "When we took a bunch of images, recompressed them from their current lossy formats into WebP, we saw on average about 40 percent decrease in size, which is staggering," said Richard Rabbat, a lead product manager on Google. Forty percent is a big decrease in file size, and will greatly speed up file transfer of images, resulting in a faster web browsing experience. Lowering the size of images is particularly important considering the fact that " "65 percent of bytes on the Web are from images," he added. WebP will have to face a lot of challenges though, before it can go mainstream. First goal of course is for tech manufacturers to include WebP as an output format for digital cameras, as well as by image editing products like Photoshop or Paint Shop Pro. You can talk about...
