Apple may be in a serious campaign to actually kill off Adobe Flash by not supporting it and by openly advocating HTML 5, but Flash won't be out of the running anytime soon. For one, Flash has a 98% adoption rate among non-Apple products and devices. Adobe has been in this kind of video embedding business for more than a decade already and it is difficult for HTML, which is starting to use it just now, to overcome it anytime soon. It also does not help that not all browsers are capable of displaying HTML 5.

So it's safe to say that you will still have to look at the Flash alternative for your websites. Unless you have some serious usability reasons to use Flash, there's really no reason to incorporate it as the medium for your entire website's interface. Don't fret, however, if you choose to use Flash. Many wonder if it is possible to optimize Flash content and the quick answer is that, yes, you can actually do it.

Search engines do read swf files. Portions that you can use to put in your SEO texts are the Accessibility contents, texts, and links. The Accessibility panel may be seen in your Flash IDE and is meant to be used for putting in relevant information about the Flash piece. The texts inside your Flash file are also read by the search engine so do not hesitate to take advantage of these means in order to optimize your site.

One thing that search engine crawlers look at are the URLs of your website's pages, but since you use Flash for your website, when you click to another page, it is possible that the URL does not change. Instead of ordinary Flash linking, you can use deep linking in order to change the URL depending on the current page in the Flash site. For this purpose, you can use Javascript or Actionscript code in order to implement deep linking.

There is also an opportunity for you to optimize Flash via dynamic embedding. Dynamic embedding is simply a Javascript library that replaces contents of an HTML file with your Flash content. This way, there is an available alternative content that you may use in order to describe and explain further the contents of your Flash site. Google Code's swfObject is one popular Javascript library that allows you to use dynamic embedding.

So, you see, optimizing Flash websites is possible with a little hard work. You've come a long way in order to create that sleek Flash site. Why not take it a step further and optimize it?
