Webmaster and SEOOnly 1 in 4 Android phones can use official Twitter client
The other day, microblogging website Twitter announced that they will be coming out with its official client for the Android mobile operating system. This is not really surprising since a lot of non-official Twitter clients around, all of which are not so satisfactory for the end users. By 2012, Android is also projected to be the world's second largest mobile operating system (next to Symbian), so an app client for this should already be established. But when Twitter announced that the client will only be available for the version 2.1 and newer versions of the operating system, we know that this is another instance of the operating system's fragmentation problems? And it's getting terrible because that means only 27.3% of all Android phones can use the client. What exactly is this fragmentation issue? As we all know, Android is open-source and it regularly comes out with software updates. Everyone is free to configure his/her mobile phone to what he/she wants it to be, but that becomes an issue for the ordinary user who doesn't want to tinker anything. It also becomes a problem for the app developer. When you have Android phones running different versions of the mobile operating system, then you got to develop multiple versions of your app for each of these versions. That means a lot of wasted time and money. Android is still currently grappling with forward and backward compatibility issues. According to Google's latest update of its Platform Versions section for the Android, only 27.3% handsets were equipped with Android 2.1. while the rest used older versions. It's troubling to realize that only 1 in every 4 Android handsets can actually utilize the official Twitter client for the Android. It's a bit sad, because of the fact that Twitter's Android client is described to be cool, having the ability to deeply synchronized with your mobile phone. At this point in time, I really don't think it's advisable to purchase an Android-equipped phone. Wait until it stabilizes (and when the prices go down!) You can talk about...
