Which JVM Web Framework Should You Use?

Thank author of this post/comment

One common question that a Java developer asks when making web applications is the most appropriate web framework to use. There are so many frameworks out there, each of which have some notable attributes, strengths, and weaknesses. There so many frameworks that sometimes it becomes confusing if you should concentrate on only one, and if you should, which one it is supposed to be.

While there are better frameworks than the others, this is all subjective and highly dependent on the kind of application that you would want to produce. As mentioned earlier, each JVM web framework has its own set of strengths and weaknesses. Play with this fact and you will learn the appropriate framework for you.

According to Matt Raible (URL placed below this article), web applications can be normally classified into three types: consumer-facing, high-traffic, stateless applications; internal, desktop-like, stateful apps; and web applications that have very high media usage. When you've found out in which type your application belongs, it becomes easier to choose one.

The key is to eliminate the available options as you go along. This means you should start with picking everyone as a possible solution, eliminating as you find out that some of them cannot meet your needs effectively. Other factors that you have to consider, also according to Raible, are the ease of development, the community support, the project future and roadmap, maintenance, and the overall technical features that the web framework provides.

Again, it all depends on the specific needs of your project. You got to think of answers to certain questions. Are you going to do it on a legacy project? Do you have to develop it immediately? Are you going to transfer from one web framework to another? Questions like this will help you assess your needs.

There's just so many web frameworks available out there. It's never easy to pick one, with the relentless hype of many bloggers trying to boast their chosen frameworks. But you should not be persuaded by them that easily. Instead, try everything if you have the time to discover for yourself what fits best your application.
