One of the most basic bits of knowledge that every webmaster should know is that Google heavily relies on the number of links that a website has and their quality in order to determine the search rank for a particular keyword. As a general rule, the more links there is, the higher the rank for that website.

However, as is with many things in this world, too much of these links can be bad. So how do you know if you have to many links already? How do you know when a website is already classified as a link farm? And how ban can it be for you when Google flags your site as having too many links for your own good?

To put it in a nutshell, you can't have too many links if the growth of these links has been organic and slow-paced. The search giant does not expect that your site may have too many links when it is just a new one, although this is sometimes permitted by Google when the links are coming in from authoritative and trusted websites.

Also take care to make sure that the links to your website grow in number slowly but constantly. If you plan to have a linkbuilding program, take care to make sure that you don't go overboard, as burst link growth is one of the characteristics that Google considers to be typical of a spam site. You wouldn't want to be flagged this way because penalties may go from simple suspension to outright banning from the search engine results.

It would be best to just spend a couple of hours per week trying to build the link base of your website. Also try to have the anchor links as varied as possible without forgetting your SEO campaign, and try not to buy those links from known sources, as Google looks down unto this kind of strategy. Stay natural, stay organic, stay gradual. These are the most important things you got to remember when building your link base.
