What Is A Minimalist Web Design?

Thank author of this post/comment

There came a time in web design trends (this was prior to the dot com bubble burst) when glitter, scrolling texts, and animated GIFs were all the rage. Back then, the links still don their usual dark blue color, and much of the attention then was concentrated on how it was possible to make people use the Internet more often than how the web sites in the Internet will look more beautiful.

Fast track to the present and we now have different schools of thought of web design emerging. Probably one of the biggest of these schools of thought is minimalism. But what is minimalism in web design? I often hear this term thrown around in the web design industry without much thought. Are these actions of self-proclaimed labeling justified?

In a quick sentence, minimalism is stripping down a work of art to its most fundamental elements. Some people may say that this kind of approach is only for those people who don't have the mental capacity to appreciate intricate details, but that is actually far from the truth. A person who appreciates minimalism is actually more knowledgeable because he/she knows the fundamental elements that make a piece of art (websites included) work.

For websites, it is not really easy to say or to define what minimalism really is. Following the abovementioned definition, maybe we can say that it's all about using only the most basic HTML elements out there, stripping your website of unnecessary clutter like excessive images. I guess the most important thing to remember here is to communicate to your visitors the purpose of your layout with as less tools as possible. That's what minimalism is all about.

For example, if your web site is all about community engagement, then by all means, use website elements (divs, columns, etc.) that you think fit this purpose. A minimalist web design is not boring and feature-less. It's straight to the point.

Some may like it. Some may don't. It's all a matter of taste. But for minimalist web designers, less is always blessed.
