Fast NTLM Authentication Proxy

Thank author of this post/comment

As far as application deployment in servers is concerned, Linux is king. Open source servers like Apache are on top of the industry. They are more often used than their proprietary counterparts, but when it comes to desktop operating systems, Windows is still king especially for companies. This can sometimes become difficult to manage if you're still a largely inexperienced junior systems administrator.

One of the problems that I had just recently is going over the proxy of our company. I installed a company Red Hat Enterprise Linux in two of the desktops, only to find out that I couldn't connect to the Web even though the computer is still connected to the company's Windows network. My manager said that the computer is probably having some authentication issues with the Windows network.

So what do we do in order to aid the situation? We used the CNTLM Authentication Proxy. CNTLM is basically a NTLM / NTLM Session Response / NTLMv2 authenticating HTTP proxy that allows you to work with your open-source operating system within the confines of your company's windows proxy server. It helps you by standing in between your applications and the company's proxy server by starting NTLM authentication whenever you need it.

At first I had some very tedious problems with the installation because the operating system couldn't connect to its private repository using yum, so what I just did was to download the RPM files directly from the website of the Red Hat Network and used yum to get the necessary dependencies. CNTLM doesn't really have dependencies aside from the required version of GLIBC. Well, don't ask me why that happened. Perhaps I still need to configure the repository settings--or probably just ditch Red Hat and go with Fedora altogether.

In any case, CNTLM is very useful for those of you who want to deploy applications in an open-source environment but under the proprietary corporate proxy servers. You can visit CNTLM's website here.
