Long tail SEO is one of those techniques in SEO that are often misunderstood by people. It's also the strategy that gets the least enthusiasm by newbie SEO practitioners. Who could get excited about a strategy that brings you only a handful of visitors anyway? What most people don't know, however, is that it could bring in nearly all of the traffic to your website.
The idea is pretty simple. Imagine a graph where the keywords for your website are arranged in a descending order, with the most popular terms at the leftmost side. Plot the actual visits to your website for each keyword and you'll see that the curve goes down from the leftmost term to the rightmost terms. The rightmost terms are considered the long tail keywords. Although, on their own, they may not bring that much traffic, when combined together, they actually give more traffic to your website that the popular keywords. Why go for this strategy? Aside from the fact that there are more visitors for your long tail keywords than the popular ones, popular keywords also mean more competition. Imagine a very popular term like "make money online." There are practically millions of websites and billions of web pages referencing this term. It's so saturated that you'll be hardpressed to beat out all the established websites to the top of the pyramid. Compare it with a keyword like, "make money online by making fishing articles" and you will most likely get on top. Quite obviously, long tail keywords are typically very specific. If "fishing" is a keyword, then "spear fishing in Alaska" is a long tail keyword. There are less people looking for such a term, but there's also less competition for you and a higher chance of getting a larger share of the pie. Some SEO experts also claim that those who look for long tail keywords are also more likely to click on ads because they already know what they are really looking forward to. You can talk about...
