Facebook's Response to Google Plus: Video Chat Through Skype

In what is not really a surprising move, social networking giant Facebook announced that they will be rolling off new features in what is presumed to be a fight back against the newly announced Google Plus. Most interesting among these is the video calling app that utilizes Skype technology.

The move was not surprising because Skype was recently acquired by Microsoft although the deal has not been finalized yet. Microsoft, meanwhile, owns a stake in Facebook so this tightened bond between Skype and Facebook only reinforces the fact that Microsoft is getting more influence in how Facebook is run.

Google Plus is the first social networking platform to introduce video calling in its repertoire through its Hangouts feature, which allows for group video calls. There has been so much raving around this feature because it was initially unavailable in other social networks. Say goodbye to that title because Facebook and Skype integration may be the Google Plus killer.

There is always that risk that integrating Skype with Facebook through the latter's video chat feature could result to more people opting to install the application altogether, but Skype could always reinvent its revenue platform and make even more money by getting more users to use Skype Out. In the meantime, Google Plus may now only have Circles as its sole saving feature, until such time when Facebook comes out with its own--or maybe until when Google Plus comes out with something else that could potentially shake Facebook.

From here on there are only two options. It's either you stick with Google Plus and potentially put all of your information with one company (with features like GMail, the search engine, and Google Apps leading their respective markets), or sticking it out with another company that intends to become more than just another social networking app. It wants to underpin all social interactions that we do through the Web. Now which is the greater good (or the lesser evil)?

In the meantime, does anyone still remember Yahoo! Messenger?
