URL's are to websites as addresses are to your home. A URL clearly defines the exact location of your webpage in the pool of billions (trillions?) of webpages available out there in the Web. It goes without saying that choosing a good URL for your webpages is equally important as having a good design for your page. There are a couple of guidelines that we could all follow when giving URLs to our webpages.

First is that your URLs should use your website keywords. This means that as much as possible, you should try to use your identified keywords for SEO in your URLs. Keywords placed in the URL of a webpage makes that webpage more relevant to that particular set of keywords.

But you should not just put keywords together there just like that. Your URL should also be descriptive of your web page's contents. Your web page should accurately describe the information that can be found in your webpage so that someone will have a quick idea upon looking at the URL in the address bar. Describing page content using the URL will also help the search engines categorize your web pages more effectively.

When constructing your URLs, also remember that short is sweet. This does not only improve the keyword density of your URLs, but also makes it easier for users to memorize. Longer URLs also tend to look spammy from a user's viewpoint. Ideally, there should only be one word. However, if this is not possible, remember to separate multiple keywords with hyphens, and not underscores, as the former has already been identified by Google as word separators.

Furthermore, lower-case and upper-case characters are differentiated in URL names. As a convention, use lower-case characters for your URL names.

Finally, always remember to be consistent with your URL names. Only use one structure and one structure alone. If you are going to use the standards mentioned above, make sure that this will be done for all the webpages in your site for consistency purposes.
