Every profession has its set of misconceptions and stereotypes. Lawyers are depicted to be big liars. Athletes are perceived to be people only with brawns but no brains. Accountants are thought to be boring people. It's already natural for human beings to become judgmental and create images of their peers based on their biases and experiences.
As expected, web designers are no exception to misconceptions. Working in front of the computer for most part of the day, mostly by themselves, can really generate a lot of unfound judgments from other people given the supposedly mysterious aura that they give. One hallmark misconception that I always hear about web designers is that they are mostly anti-social creatures. While this may be true for some, the same cannot be said about everyone. Not only will it be difficult for people who do not like to interact to get inspiration for their designs, it also becomes difficult for them to get new clients if they refuse to talk to people. Another thing that is often viewed about web designers is that they charge too much for work that is supposedly easy to do. Some people think that it is easy to learn HTML and CSS. This is true, sure, you can just get a book and start from there. But it takes a lot of experience to know which designs work with the given requirements of your clients. And given that the website is the only face that has a company has in the web, it's startling to know that some people give little value for it. Lastly, one funny misconception I hear people make about web designers is that they hardly know anything about making websites functional. Web designers have to make sure that their designs are compatible with the backend code that make the websites tick. Some training has to be in order here. Misconceptions will never go away.
