Making Your Website Friendlier to Seniors

Thank author of this post/comment

Just a while ago I spent some time in a computer shop and assisted a senior citizen with his email account. He was having problems logging into his newly created email account so I helped him with it and advised on how he should configure his settings. I felt kinda good right after, knowing that I helped someone, but I also know that computer literacy is one common problems that senior citizens are having today when they try to cope with the modern world.

Web designers certainly can do a lot to make their webpages friendly to senior citizens. Though seniors comprise only a small fraction of websites' visitor base, the efforts that are needed are not that difficult to implement anyway and the lessons learned from dealing with senior website visitors can be also applied to everyone else having a problem with the usability of your site. Usability may be extra-important for seniors, but it applies to everyone.

First off, your website should be organized. Information should be well-constructed without filling your web pages with too much text. Information should be separated into small tidbits and seniors should be able to tell what will happen by clicking any of your links.

A lot of seniors already have problems with their eyesight, hence it is more advisable to use a lot of visuals to indicate what a link does instead of long instructions paragraphs. If there has to be text, make sure that there are large, understandable headings for each one. You can use action words or questions for this one. Put each of your sections in a logical order and grouped in a logical manner.

If you are unsure whether your site is senior-friendly or not, I would suggest taking in a senior who is not that familiar with the Internet to test out your site. It is only through the opinions from your target audience that you will be able to identify what still needs to be addressed.

For more information on how you can make your website more senior-friendly, read these guidelines from the National Institute of Aging.
