Sometimes it takes an expert to optimize your code and make sure that your website works properly. There are certain things that take an expert to acknowledge, much like how DBAs have mastered the art of database optimization in order to effectively take care of the data of a certain website.

But there are also certain things that do not take a genius to know. These are the things that should have been taken care of at first encounter. In fact, these errors are so fundamental that they should not have been implemented in the first place. It's already glaring at you in the face and yet you still couldn't do anything about it.

Just earlier today I chanced upon this certain website (I won't say which) that loads thousands upon thousands of names in a very long list upon entering. The website had something to do with storing the data of students and their full names. It just printed it in a very long list that took nearly a minute to load. They say that it only takes about ten seconds before a visitor to your website becomes bored and leaves. The designer of this site certainly did not know it.

So what do you have to do when you really have a very long list of names that you gotta show your visitors? First, do not print it on the homepage of your website. Some other visitor may not care about the list at all and, hence, you are there wasting his/her bandwidth. Second, as much as possible, refrain from printing the entire list on the webpage at all. Just store it in a PDF file and have it linked to your website. The readers who are then interested in this will have to download the PDF separately. Finally, if you really really have to print it in your page, at least use pagination. Don't load everything at once.

Optimizing your website takes a lot of obvious steps. This is one of them.
