AT&T to throttle heavy data users

Starting October 1, AT&T will start throttling the top 5 percent of its users who are in the unlimited data plan of their wireless network in a bid to deal with the explosion of wireless data user. And according to experts, this signals the end of the used-unlimited-data era.

Throttling is done by slowing down the connection of a certain device which will keep it from eating more data. AT&T however did not specify what the threshold for the throttling will be.

AT&T is not the first carrier to jump into the the throttling model. T-Mobile USA was the first carrier to employ throttling, same with Virgin Mobile, Sprint Nextel's prepaid arm.

According to AT&T, the throttling should not cause panic to the majority of its users as it will only affect a very small number of people in their unlimited data plans.

Verizon has not yet announced if they too will do the same. But the sure thing is, eventually, bandwidth demand all over the world, not just in the US, will be too high that it's already too hard to ignore.
